Welcome dear DC World readers, to the latest edition of our ever popular Confessions of a DC Geek.  Today, we edge that little bit closer to our quarter of a century edition, with #24.  This time we have Abdul Hye, who many of you will probably know as DC Fanverse on social media pages.

Here, Abdul talks about his loves, and loathes of the DC Universe; mostly loves of course, the big loathe coming with a Marvel reference.

My thanks to Adbul, a pleasure to have you a part of this segment of our site and I am sure that our readers will enjoy all that you have confessed.

If, like Abdul you wish to take part in a future edition , then please feel free to contact me directly on Twitter – @JH_ComicBookMan or the team @_DCWorld, and failing that you can email me, john@dcworld.org.uk or on any of tour other social media pages.  Be great to have you take part.

And so, on with the confessions…

First of all, would you mind telling me a bit about yourself – name, age (no pressure), where you’re from, what you do for a living, anything else you wish to tell us about yourself?

Name: Abdul Hye / Age: 36 / Born and Bred in London (Parents are from Bangladesh) / Work in retail / Entrepreneur

What, or who, helped kick-start your DC Comics fandom and when?

I have always been a DC fan purely because of Christopher Reeve Superman Movie and the cartoons, like Justice League Unlimited and Adventures of Superman. This was all when I was young and got pushed further with the release of the DC Universe Online game (January 2011).

Who is your favourite DC Superhero and why?

My fav has always been The Man of Steel, Superman. He embodies what I vision, to be able to help the helpless, fight tyranny and to be the symbol of hope. Sounds corny I know but that’s how I felt.   Can’t do that in real life, so to do things like that in the DCUO game is a bonus. (Can’t argue with that – John)

Who is your favourite DC Villain, why so?

Oh, never thought of that but I suppose the likes of Black Adam, Lex Luthor and Joker. All have their unique evilness that I like.

Away from the two mentioned above, who is another character you could call a favourite, villain/hero/other character or one of each, what is the reason they are so great to you?

Batman and CW Arrow.

Batman – well what can I say. He’s the most relatable character there is. A normal human being and yet one of the greatest superhero there is. We certainly are more close to becoming him then Superman. And not to mention the cool outfit, gadgets and cars.

CW Arrow (season 1-4 or so) because he was the Archer version of Batman; Cruel, violent and I loved the hood. Not fond of him in the comics or cartoon. (Controversial, I know a few readers who may have something to say about that ?, isn’t that right Emerald Archer and GA_Quiver? – John)

TV shows – which is your favourite DC effort, past or present?

Smallville

What is your favourite DC Movie?

Man of Steel. It brought Superman back on to the screen with something that I had always wished for. For the underwear to be inside. (Ok, so I just spat my tea all over my desk, haha – John)

The DC Universe has featured many, many actors who have appeared on TV and in the movies, not forgetting a wealth of voice actors who lend their skills to animated movies/series’, so I ask you – who is your favourite actor, anyone who has made any kind of appearance within a DC creation?

So many great actor in so many different shows.

Tom Welling (Smallville) / Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) / Kristin Kreuk (Smallville) my younger years crush, and still is / Robin Taylor (Gotham) / Heath Ledger (Dark Knight) / Tom Ellis (Lucifer) / Caity Lotz (Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow) / Tala Ashe (Legends of Tomorrow) / And so many more…

Are there any DC Universe characters, any that we haven’t seen a live action/animated version of so far, you would like to see become part of the movie, TV or even animated universe?  If so, which character and who would you like to see play/voice the part/s?

Hmmmm. I would like to see a CW show where they explore the magical universe, and have it as part of the Arrowverse.  A show based on the past lives of Nabu, The Lord of Order. Constantine could have been a good show. (It was great, this needs bringing back – John).  Plus, with the Batwoman show here it’s a perfect opportunity to expand on this diversity campaign and introduce a male Muslim superhero, Bilal Asselah (Night Runner). (Yes…!!! – JH)

Comics – do you read them? If so do you have a favourite series, or a graphic novel, that you enjoy more than others?

Never read a comic in my life.

DC vs Marvel – Social media seems to be a hotspot for this kind of talk, however, at times, it can get out of control and comments can become quite malicious (from both sides I might add); what are your thoughts on the whole DC vs Marvel issue, or do you feel that there should be no issue and, as Joker said in Batman ’89, “Why can’t we all just get along?”

Yeah, of course there should be no issue. But the Insane always call the sane Insane.  This rivalry will never stop.

Apple or Samsung. iOS or Android, Mercedes or BMW, DC or Marvel

Not a big fan of Marvel in general, but kudos on their cinematic universe. Enjoyed a lot of their movies.

If you were to fall in a swamp/be electrocuted/fall in a vat of chemicals/witness the death of a loved one etc. and made the choice to become superhero or villain, what would your name and powers be and what sort of costume would you go for?

Depends on the power I got. If one of my powers was flight then I would be wearing something bright.

Otherwise it would be dark colours with a hood.

I think magic-based power like Shazam and my name would be Ar-Ra’d The Angel of Thunder. (First one to give us a proposed name, love it – John)

The name could do with some work. Where is Cisco when you need him? (?)

Apparel – do you wear any clothing that relates to DC Comics and its Universe?  If so, do you have a favourite item of clothing that is still worn aplenty?

Not really, I mean I have a few t-shirts that have the emblem of superheroes on them. However, I do have a jacket that I wear on very special occasions – The Smallville Season 10 Red Leather Jacket (So cool – John)

Conventions – do you attend them and, if so is there a favourite con that you have attended?  If you do attend do you tend to cosplay at all, if so who or what do you cosplay as (pics of this would be great)?

Yes I do. Started going a few years back, attending MCM Comic Con, London Film and Comic Con and Heroes and Villain Fan Fest

Never Cosplayed, but once dressed up as Smallville Red and Blue Blur of Season 10

Before we go on to questions regarding your collection, if you’re happy to do so could you please tell our readers where we may find you online (Twitter, YouTube, Blogs etc.)?

This editions’ BIG question/s:

BIG Q1).  We are all well aware now of new movie The Batman, which will be winging its way to us soon.  Therefore, I would like to ask your thoughts on the casting choice of Robert Pattinson.  Are you happy with the choice or would you have preferred to see someone else in the role?

I would like to have seen someone else. Purely because every time I think of him I just think of Twilight. So, ergh… LOL

BIG Q2).  Staying on the new The Batman movie, we have seen lots of rumours of who the villain, or villains may be. Is there a particular villain that you would like to see Batman go up against, maybe one we haven’t seen on the big screen before?

Deathstroke

Now we have your confessions of all things DC, I’d like to ask about your DC collection.

First up, do you collect large amounts of various and random DC merchandise or is there a single type of item that you enjoy picking up more than others?

I am not really a collector to be honest, never was allowed to buy useless stuff, as mother would say. That trend seems to be still going but I have picked a few unique items up since I stated to pursue this passion again.

The Smallville Jacket / BvS Wonder Woman Sword of Athena / BvS Aquaman Quindent / Few DC Movie Art Books / Few DC Movies Blu-ray steelbook versions. / Looking to get Wonder Woman God-Killer sword and Aquaman’s movie Trident

Do you collect items that are specific to a character/movie/TV Show etc. or is it all things DC Comics?

All Thing DC Comics.

Thinking about the items you own, do you have a most prized possession?  One that you cherish most of all; why does it mean so much to you?

It will have to be the Smallville Jacket. It’s the closest thing that makes me a superhero.

In your collection do you have anything that is considered a bootleg piece of merchandise?  If so, what is the item and what made you buy it?

Nope.

Do you have something in your collection that could be described as a rare item?  If so, what is this rare item?

Nothing that’s rare.

When you want to show off your collection, what is you “go to” item?

The Smallville jacket.

Going back to conventions again, if you attend, what sort of merchandise do you like to pick up, or do you prefer getting to meet the celebs and receive photos/autographs etc?

For all the above. Meet celebs, get photos and pick up any unique items that can be found.

What are the biggest and smallest items in your collection?

Biggest – Sword, Smallest- Pin badges or Keyrings.

What is the most/least expensive/valuable item that you have purchased to add to your collection?

It will be the Aquaman Trident once I get it, until then it’s the swords that are the most expensive.

Is there a Holy Grail for you, an item that you would love to own that may prove to be extremely difficult or even impossible to obtain?

So far it’s been the God-Killer sword and Trident.  God-Killer sword all sold out, and only one company makes the Trident.

Finally – away from your confessions and collection, what are your hopes going forward for the world of DC Comics?  Please feel free to write about all mediums (TV/Movies/Comics etc.) that you wish.

Well I hope that DC/Warner Bros will recognise the impact that the Arrowverse has had and give them the green light to expand on it massively, maybe even have it cross over to the DCEU. But right now I just want to see Tom welling, Brandon Routh, and Tyler Hoechlin all playing a version of superman in the Crisis event.

As for DCEU I hope they can bring the universe together and SNAP Justice League movie to dust.

And that’s it, all over.  Once again my thanks to Abdul for confessing all.  I hope you have all enjoyed it and that it has given you the urge to get in touch.  Please do.

For now, take care all and remember…

‘You have great powers, only some of which you have as yet discovered.’

Cheers, John
