Why does it feel so good to be bad? For decades we have known the Joker to be an over-the-top, sadistic villain. Turns out he won’t be bad. He’ll be good. Looks like the infamous Joker will turn over a new leaf in Sean Gordon Murphy’s new comic series Batman: White Knight. Are we finally going to see a good side of the Joker? According to Murphy, Batman and the Joker will trade places in a surprising new storyline. Murphy’s comic Batman: White Knight, will reverse the roles of superhero and villain. Our beloved Batman becomes a villain, while the one you love to hate (the Joker) will be the unexpected hero of Gotham City, accompanied by DC’s ever-irresistible partner in crime, Harley Quinn.

Sean Gordon Murphy is best known for his work on Batman/Scarecrow: Year One, Teen Titans, Hellblazer: City of Demons and Tokyo Ghoul. Murphy is currently working on his solo Batman project and judging by the sketches he’s been teasing us with on Twitter, we think this is going to be good. So good. Since the news broke about Murphy’s new project, the Twitterverse has been throwing him questions left, right and centre. One fan asked if Nightwing would make an appearance and Murphy gave us just the answer we needed, “Nightwing is in this. And so is his perky butt.” Murphy also teased that there will be a big reveal regarding Harley. Is she still criminal or is she “cured”? He answered “Yes and no.” OK, puddin’s, I don’t know about you, but this is enough to send my geeky bones tingling with excitement.

Murphy also teased in a recent tweet, “My Batman story makes it OK to have a crush on Joker!” Crushing on Harley I get, but the Joker, not so much. Batman: White Knight will delve deep into real-world issues while the Joker takes on the role of a politician, campaigning to be the new ‘protector’ of Gotham City. After being cured of his absurdity, the Joker realises that Batman is just another contributor to Gotham’s rising crime. We are so used to films and comics where the Joker is portrayed as the villain and Batman is the masked hero. But this version of Batman will see our Dark Knight fall, while a White Knight rises. Move over Batman, there’s a new saviour in town.

The new mini-series will be available from October 4. I’m ready, are you?
